SEO in Next.js

Next.js can rank well, but SEO isn't a framework feature you toggle on. It's metadata, fast pages, indexable content, and a clean URL structure. Here's how to approach it technically.

Short answer

For content and landing pages you want HTML crawlers can read immediately, strong titles/descriptions, internal links, and solid Core Web Vitals. The Next.js App Router helps with Server Components and the Metadata API — if you use them.

No framework beats thin content or a site that's slow or blocked. Tech supports; content and intent stay leading.

Technical basics in Next.js

  • Metadata API: title, description, openGraph, canonicals per route
  • Server-rendered or static HTML for indexable content
  • Sitemap and robots.txt that match your environments
  • Clean routing: no duplicate URLs without a canonical
  • Images with the right sizes/formats (LCP and CLS)
  • Structured data where the product truly benefits

Rendering and indexing

Content that only appears after a heavy client-side fetch is riskier for SEO than server-delivered markup. For marketing and knowledge-base pages: render the core on the server.

App screens behind login don't need indexing. Consciously separate public marketing routes from private app routes (headers, robots, noindex where needed).

Performance is SEO-adjacent

Core Web Vitals aren't a ranking myth, but they also don't replace relevance. Slow LCP or poor INP hurts users and signals. Fix bottlenecks measure-first: hero, fonts, JS bundles, TTFB.

See also the article on slow Next.js sites for the fix order.

A work order that makes sense

  1. 1. Crawlability

Can Google reach important URLs? No accidental noindex on production, no auth wall on landings.

  2. 2. Metadata and structure

Unique titles, clear H1s, internal links between services and the knowledge base.

  3. 3. Speed and UX

Measure CWV, fix the biggest pages, lock gains with monitoring.

  4. 4. Content

Pages that answer search intent. Tech without substance doesn't rank.

What I do and don't do

Yes: technical SEO in Next.js, performance, metadata architecture, fixing indexing issues. No: link-building campaigns or 'guarantees for position 1'.

Not automatically. Content sites can rank excellently on WordPress. Next.js wins on control and app performance; you still need solid metadata and content.
