When should you choose React?
React isn't the default answer to 'we need a website'. It fits when you take UI complexity, state, and reusable components seriously. Otherwise it's overkill.

Short answer
Choose React when you're building an interactive web app, portal, or SaaS with substantial UI state and longer-term development. Choose something simpler for a content site or one-off landing page without app behavior.
In my practice React usually arrives via Next.js: routing, rendering, and production defaults included, without giving up the component model.
React fits well when…
- Users work in the UI (dashboards, wizards, editors)
- You expect years of feature additions
- Multiple developers or teams need a shared UI language
- You want a mature ecosystem (forms, charts, design systems)
- TypeScript and component boundaries matter for maintenance
React is often not the first choice when…
- Mostly brochure or blog content with little interaction
- Non-technical editors must manage everything in a classic CMS without an app
- The team has no JS/TS capacity and that won't change
- An existing stack (e.g. server templates) already covers the problem well
React vs Next.js
React is the UI library. Next.js is the framework around it: routes, server rendering, assets, conventions. For production web apps I usually choose Next.js so you don't reinvent SSR, routing, and bundling yourself.
Pure client-side React (CRA-style) can work for internal tools, but often lacks SEO, performance defaults, and a clear server story.
Decision questions
1. App or site?
Do people need to complete tasks, or mainly read information?
2. Horizon?
A one-off campaign, or a product that grows for three years?
3. Team?
Is there JS/TS knowledge (in-house or freelance) for maintenance?
4. UI complexity?
Lots of state and reuse → React. Static pages → lighter stack.
